WHAT APPLE CIDER VINEGAR TRULY AN (AND CAN'T DO FOR YOUR HEALTH
SEPTEMBER 28, 2015 |
What Apple Cider Vinegar Truly Can (and Can't) Do for Your Health
What can apple cider vinegar do for you? If you’re a regular reader of health and wellness blogs, you probably think the answer is: EVERYTHING! apple cider vinegar (as the cool kids call it) is so commonly touted as a safe, natural, and completely effective panacea that it probably deserves its own sketch on Portlandia.
But if you're a bit skeptical that a tart liquid made from fermented apples can cure diabetes, banish acne, soothe a sore throat, whiten teeth, banish dandruff, and basically make your life perfect in every way, we can relate. With all the fuss about apple cider vinegar, we had to look into what science actually says. If you're a diehard devotee, you may want to look away.
What the Science Supports
1. It promotes stable blood sugar.
You know that light-headed, low-energy feeling you sometimes get after chowing down on too many refined carbs? That’s your blood sugar spiking—and then crashing down. The acetic acid found in apple cider vinegar (and most other types of vinegars, like white vinegar and red wine vinegar) contains anti-glycemic properties, and studies show that consuming apple cider vinegar before a meal can help keep those kinds of spikes at bay. This could, in theory, have something to do with why people who take apple cider vinegar claim that the stuff boosts their mood and energy, says Los Angeles-based holistic nutrition and wellness coach Nicole Granato.
The blood sugar benefits might even spell good news for people with diabetes, though researchers still have more to figure out. “If they follow a protocol of drinking some vinegar before every meal for a year or more, does that reduce reliance on insulin medications? Reduce the progression of their disease? Those questions haven’t been answered yet,” Johnston says.
2. It can fight bacteria.
apple cider vinegar has been used to combat infections like ulcers and sores since the time of the ancient Greeks. In fact, there are plenty of studies documenting vinegar’s antimicrobial effects. But just because apple cider vinegar is capable of fighting bacterial infections doesn’t mean that using it to do so is actually a good idea. Because it’s so acidic, pouring it into your ears for an ear infection or using it on open sores or cuts is almost guaranteed to irritate your skin. It’s not safe to use by itself for a sore throat, either, because it could do more harm than good. “You shouldn't gargle vinegar. There have been cases where people have ended up in the hospital because they accidentally choked on it,” Johnston says.
3. It can soothe jellyfish stings.
Weirdly, research shows that if you happen to get stung by a jellyfish, dousing the affected area in apple cider vinegar may help. It can deactivate nematocysts, the sharp barbs that jellyfish use to inject their painful venom. But experts say that warm water can have a similar effect—without irritating your skin the way apple cider vinegar may.
What’s Not So Clear
1. It improves your skin.
Anecdotally, there are plenty of people who say that applying apple cider vinegar to their faces helps get rid of acne and improve their skin’s texture. “I have clients with chronic acne who steam their face with diluted apple cider vinegar, and within two to three weeks, there’s a difference,” Granato says. And since apple cider vinegar contains antimicrobial properties, it could help acne-prone skin, she says. But for now, there aren’t any studies out there to prove it.
2. It gets rid of warts.
A handful of studies have shown that putting acetic acid on your skin can destroy wart tissue. But this research used super high concentrations of the stuff (up to 99 percent). Since apple cider vinegar and other vinegars are only around 5 percent acetic acid, they wouldn't be nearly strong enough to kill a wart.
3. It clears up dandruff.
Though an apple cider vinegar rinse might make your hair look shinier, there’s no credible research to support the idea that it can clear up dandruff. (Johnston had never even heard of this until we asked her.)
4. It whitens teeth.
apple cider vinegar antibacterial properties could conceivably help get some plaque and germs off of your teeth, Granato says. However, there isn't evidence to show that apple cider vinegar can whiten teeth. In fact, it’ll probably leave your pearly whites in pretty bad shape. “I can’t advocate whitening your teeth with apple cider vinegar at all,” Johnston says. “We don’t have a lot of acid protection in the mouth, and you don’t want to lose the enamel on your teeth.”
The Safe Way to Use Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar's acetic acid contains some beneficial properties, but in high concentrations, acedic acid can be a poison. So if you’re going to drink the stuff or use it on your skin, you’ve got to be careful.
Both Johnston and Granato agree that the best way to use apple cider vinegar is in tiny doses. If you’re drinking the stuff, swig a tablespoon diluted in at least eight ounces of water no more than twice a day. And always chase it with food, which can help clear the acid out of your throat faster and prevent irritation, Johnston recommends.
The same principle applies if you want to try using it on your skin. Dilute a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a bowlful of hot water and dunk a face towel or rag in the mixture. “You can steam your face with the rag for 12 minutes,” Granato says.
The Takeaway
Most of the research on apple cider vinegar has looked at its effects on blood sugar, and those studies seem to pan out. Experts accept that apple cider vinegar has antibacterial properties too—but because vinegar is harsh, it’s not the best choice for treating sore throats or wounds (except those jellyfish stings). As for the other stuff, there’s no scientific data to support using apple cider vinegar for better skin, less dandruff, or whiter teeth. What’s more, it might be harmful. If you decide to try using it anyway, proceed with caution. “This is an instance where more isn’t better,” Johnston says.
INTERNET CAFE
INTERNET CAFES
I was using the interet cafes quite a lot at one point it just seemed more convenient, internet speeds seemed better and resources seemed more reafily available, such as photocopying and fax machines.
Even latte machines at the ready.
Security was an obvious issue at a later stage but wasnt evident as a problem to begin with. From people simply peering over the sholder to view what you were doing to the owners applying specific permissions to read search histories.
The convenience of these place is clearly unquestionable when internet speeds were a problem.
Its all a thing of the past now with the comfort and convenience of the internet in the home office.
Its became almost as impossible to use your laptop on the go as it has become to #browse. Wuth many a person peeribg over your shoulder to see whats being written on the interactive magazine in the making before its even been published.
I also had some unpublished blogs which I am making use of now.

How To Look 10 Years Younger, Instantly
How To Look 10 Years Younger, Instantly

There are some things in life that get better with age (wine, cheese, and George Clooney, to name a few). Generally speaking, however, we’d like our skin and hair to look as young as possible—or at least be an accurate reflection of how we feel on the inside. In our never-ending quest for the fountain of youth, we spoke with makeup artist Fiona Stiles and Joico celebrity colorist Denis de Souza (Kate Mara and Mila Kunis are his clients) and asked for their expert tips on how to fake a younger appearance. Lucky for us, they were more than happy to spill their secrets—take that, gravity.
Click through the slideshow above for eight makeup and hair tips to look younger, instantly!
- 1 of 23
Tip #1: Luminize
“When it comes to skin, luminosity and dewiness signify youth,” Stiles says. She recommends employing a creamy luminizer or highlighter, like W3ll People’s Universalist Luminous Multi-Use Colorstick 1 ($35) or RMS’ Living Luminizer($38) to the bridge of your nose and tops of the cheekbones for fresh, dewy skin. - 2 of 23
Tip #2: Brown Over Black
Stiles recommends choosing brown instead of black when it comes to your eye makeup. “Generally, black makes your eyes look smaller,” she says. “Plums are also really pretty colors for any eye color—they’re very warm.” Instead of harsh lines, she suggests using a chocolate brown eyeliner with “a little twinkle.” Try MAC’s Eye Kohl ($16) in Teddy. - 3 of 23
Tip #3: Soften Your Brows
“In Asia, straight brows are a huge trend right now,” Stiles says. “After all, when you’re born, you have no arch.” She says that in the U.S., we like our arches high and dramatic—unfortunately, this can start to look cartoonish and severe once you get older. The solution? Soften your arch and fill your brows in lightly with a brow pencil that’s lighter than your hair color. If you have very light hair, Stiles says to use a tinted brow gel like Anastasia’s Tinted Brow Gel ($22). - 4 of 23
Tip #4: Cream Over Powder
When it comes to blush, choose cream formulas over powder—they blend seamlessly and settle into the skin without appearing caked-on. Surprisingly, Stiles says to avoid gel formulas if you have mature skin: “They look better on younger skin because they can be difficult to blend,” she explains. Her favorite blush? Shiseido’s Lumizing Satin Face Color ($30). - 5 of 23
Tip #4: Avoid Sparkle
Stiles advises that you avoid anything frosty or sparkly in the quest to look younger, because it can accentuate fine lines. Instead, opt for satin, dewy, or even matte finishes—they leave a chic, polished final effect. - 6 of 23
Tip #5: Go Lighter
When it comes to your hair, there’s one general rule of thumb in terms of looking younger: go lighter instead of darker. “The darker your hair, the harsher it will look against your skin,” de Souza says. “It will show all of your wrinkles and lines, especially anywhere near your face line or eye area, [since] this [area] always becomes a focal point with any hair color or cut.” Instead, he suggests going lighter to soften your face and make it appear more youthful. But don’t get carried away—he says to go no more than two shades lighter than your natural hair color to keep things looking natural. - 7 of 23
Tip #6: Go Warmer
De Souza recommends getting warm highlights around your face or a warmer base to promote a younger appearance. Choose honey, golden tones—he says they’ll complement your complexion and soften the appearance of lines and wrinkles. - 8 of 23
Tip #7: Get Glossy
One easy way to reverse time on your aging hair is a quick salon gloss. “It’s a great option when you’re looking to amp up the shine factor,” de Souza says. “It also keeps your color vibrant so that it doesn’t lose luster.” Between trips, keep your hair shiny and healthy by applying a hair mask at least once a week—he suggests Joico’s KPAK Intense Hydrator ($40). - 9 of 23
Tip #8: Mind Your Roots
One last tip: keep an eye on your roots. De Souza says that it’s important for his clients to get their roots touched up every four weeks: “Once the grays start showing, it will definitely age you and [draw attention away] from the great color you once had.” Try L’Oreal Paris’ Root Rescue ($8) to banish greys during salon visits.Keep clicking to shop the products in this story! - 10 of 23RMS Beauty Living Luminizer ($38)
